A Systematic Review of Early Childhood Exclusionary Discipline

Young children (birth to age 5) are more likely be expelled or suspended than school-aged children, but we know comparatively little about the precursors and prevention of exclusion in early childhood settings. Furthermore, what research has been conducted not systematically synthesized inform policy funding decisions. The present review seeks determine how is defined assessed academic literature. Studies measuring suspension expulsion were gathered coded for study characteristics, definitions, measures exclusionary discipline disparity, factors associated with rates. Results (n = 20) show an accelerating pace inquiry that attends multiple levels ecological system (children, teachers, programs) across diverse settings (home-, center-, school-based care).
